Five Things to Know Before You Experience a Car Accident

A motor vehicle accident can result in serious injuries and emotional trauma. Additionally, the pain and suffering experienced by auto accident victims can be exacerbated when the cause of the accident is in question.

Whether you commute by car, bicycle, or on foot, the odds are that in your lifetime you’re going to be involved in an accident or two. So it’s important to know beforehand these five things that you need to do right after a crash – knowing about them may improve the chances of a settlement or verdict in your favor if there is a dispute as to who was at fault.

  1. Take Pictures

Take photos of everything you can after an accident including cars involved, location, damage, license plate numbers and if possible even people involved and/or witnesses. This is so much easier to accomplish these days, as many people now have smart phones with inbuilt cameras.

  1. Gather information
  • Exchange proof of insurance information as well as ID numbers with others involved in the accident
  • Ask witnesses to provide you with contact information or a business card.
  1. Call the Police

It may seem easier at the time to not wait for the police if the accident doesn’t appear to be major, but having a police report on file can make a huge difference later if the facts of the accident are questioned.

  1. Understand the Effects of Adrenaline

In an accident, a person’s body normally produces adrenaline, which boosts the supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles. This prepares the body for emergency situations, but it also decreases the body’s ability to recognize immediate pain.

Many times, people who have been in an accident initially report feeling no pain, only to later discover, when the adrenaline subsides, that they’ve suffered an injury.

With this in mind, it’s important to have a medical evaluation before speaking about any pain, or lack of pain, with others involved (or their insurers) right after an accident has occurred.

  1. Seek Qualified, Ethical and Compassionate Legal Counsel

Insurance companies have a team of attorneys working on their behalf, which is why it’s so important for you to have someone who honestly represents your interests too.

Finding the right attorney shouldn’t be based simply on television ads, but rather on facts, reputation and compatibility. Researching attorneys includes checking their qualifications, references and meeting one-on-one to see if it’s the right fit.

Having a highly qualified, ethical, compassionate and successful attorney in your corner can make a tremendous difference when it comes to navigating the tricky legal waters in the wake of an accident.
