Preventing Bicycle Accidents on Annual Death Ride

Bicycle enthusiasts look forward to the annual Death Ride, a challenging bike course which covers five mountain passes including both sides of Monitor Pass and Ebbetts Pass and Carson Pass. Participants are encouraged to choose 1 or more of the mountain passes according to their skills level and preparation. They are also asked to follow specific safety precautions to ensure their safety against bicycle accidents.

The Annual Death Ride’s website contains clear safety reminders:

  • Helmets are required
  • Earphones, iPod and MP3 players are not allowed
  • Ride in a single file and to the right
  • Obey all traffic laws and be aware of vehicular traffic in order to avoid collisions with cars and other motor vehicles
  • Carry extra essentials such as tubes and a pump, water and energy food.
  • Prepare for erratic weather changes
  • Use visible lighting in front and back of the bicycle
  • Control bicycle speed on descents
  • Use brakes sparingly

The Annual Death Ride is a popular event that draws huge crowds of bicycle enthusiasts and spectators together with their families. The number of cyclists who travel to the event sites reaches its peak around this period, which also exposes cyclists to greater risks of injury from bicycle accidents.

Recently, a cyclist headed towards Carson City was not so lucky when a semi-truck failed to notice him and hit his bicycle from behind. The crash occurred in the narrow tunnel of Cave Rock and resulted in life-threatening injuries to the rider. The site of the accident is prone to collision due to its limited size that can only accommodate one vehicle at a time.

Bike accidents often lead to serious injuries such as fractures, internal organ injuries, disfigurement and head injury. If you or someone you know is involved in an accident while riding a bicycle, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
