Las Vegas Burn Injury Attorney

burn injuriesA burn injury is any damage to the skin caused by electricity, heat, chemicals or radiation. Annually, approximately two million people suffer burn injuries, 6,000 of which result in death. Burn injuries are the third largest cause of accidental death in the United States. Fortunately, continuing advances in medical technology allow people to live even with 90 percent of their body damaged by burn injuries.

There are three main types of burn injuries: chemical, electrical and thermal.

A chemical burn occurs when the skin is exposed to a strong chemical substance, such as an acid. It is important to rinse the exposed skin thoroughly with water to remove the chemical. The second type of burn injury is an electrical burn caused by contact with an electric current. These burn injuries can result in serious skin, bone, and nerve damage, as well as posing a deadly heart attack risk. The last and most common type of burn injury is the thermal burn injury. Thermal burns occur when fire, gasoline, hot liquids, heaters, and more, come in contact with the exposed skin.

Medical professionals categorize burn severity in three categories: first, second, and third degree burns.

A first-degree burn is considered to be the least serious type of burn injury. First-degree burn injuries cause damage to the outermost layer of skin, the epidermis, causing pain, redness and swelling. A second-degree burn injury causes damage to the first and second layers of the skin, causing pain, redness, sensitivity and blistering and may appear to be white and dry. With second degree burn injuries, scarring may appear and skin grafting may be needed. Lastly, third-degree burn injuries are the most severe type of burn. In this injury, all levels of the skin are affected as well as the underlying tissue. Skin may appear to be blackish brown and leathery. Ironically, third degree burn injuries may be the least painful because of the extensive nerve damage caused by the burn. If you have experienced a third degree burn, surgical grafting or a transplant will be necessary.
